Back Up Your Data
Your data is your most important asset. So hopefully you've seen this tip before, and maybe you're even doing it (or your IT department is). But there are a couple of things to be aware of when it comes to data back ups:
- Be aware that any data on your hard drive (usually your C: drive) is probably NOT being backed-up by your IT people. Typically only network drives are backed-up. So if you've got key data on your local drive, move it to a network drive...NOW!
- Make sure your back ups are actually working. What I mean is, even if the back ups are being executed daily, are they *really* working? Has your IT staff ever tried to restore from back up as a test? Even if the tape drive is buzzing and the little red light is glowing, that doesn't guarantee that the back up is working. Test it!
- Take your back ups off-site. After 9/11, we all know what is possible. So make sure your data is being backed up AND being moved off-site on a regular basis. A colleague of mine has offices that were hit by the Anthrax virus in 2001, and he had no access to ANY data for more than a week. Try that with your job!
